A ready-to-use 30-minute plan for the first day of class. Help students learn names, feel welcomed, and participate at their own comfort level — no pressure, no forced sharing.
This plan is designed for teachers, online instructors, tutors, student group leaders, and anyone running a first-day classroom session. It works for middle school through adult learners and can be adapted for in-person or online classes.

| 28–30 min | Closing note | Positive end and next step |
Greet the class warmly. Say: "Before we begin, I want you to know that everything we do today is optional. You can pass on any question. You can answer in writing instead of speaking. There are no grades or scores here — this is just a way to get to know each other."
Use One Word Check-In. Ask: "What is one word for how you are feeling on this first day?" Go first as the teacher. Accept all answers without comment.
Use Name Spinner to randomly select students for a low-stakes question, or use This or That for group binary choices. Students can raise hands, point, or write answers.
Use Icebreaker Bingo to get students moving and talking, or spin the Question Wheel for whole-class discussion.
Build a collaborative story with Story Chain or let a few volunteers share with Show and Tell.
Thank the class. Say: "Thank you for sharing today. I am looking forward to this term with you. If there is anything you want to ask or tell me privately, my door is always open."
"Good morning, everyone. Welcome to [class name]. Before we start, I want to say: everything today is optional. If I ask a question and you do not feel like answering, just pass. You can write your answer instead of saying it out loud. There are no right answers and no grades here. This is just a chance to get comfortable with each other. Let us begin."
For online classes, share the game tools on screen. Let students type answers in chat instead of speaking. Keep cameras optional. Use breakout rooms for Icebreaker Bingo or Story Chain in small groups of 4-5 students for 5 minutes each.
